ABBEY AND THE CORONATION PICTURE. he general opinion appears to be that a great honor has been paid to American art in the recent choice of Mr. l-I. A. Abbey as the painter of the coming coronation scene, to take place in Westminster Abbey next year. It is said that in securing Mr. Abbey, King Edward is sure of a brilliant piece of work, which in color and composition will rival the most famous coronation scenes of the past. The Hartford Timzr (March 20) thu s sketches Hr. Abbey's career: "Edwin Austin Abbey is a native of Pihiladelphia, where he was born in 1852. His wife was a daughter of Frederick Mead, of New York. He was educated at the I'cnnsyl'ania Academy of Fine Arts and won his first reputation as an artist by his work as an illustrator for the publishing firm of Harper & Brothers. It was the Harpers who sent him to l-Ingland in 1875, with the result that he has since spent most of his time there. Many years ago he and other American artists made a home for themselves at a place called Broadway. near Stratfrd-on-Avon. His first oil painting was not exhibited at the Royal Academy in London until 1890, when he made a great success with his-.'A May-Day Morning.' In 1894 he had another distiuguislied success with 'Fiamniettzfs Song.' His reputation chiefly rests on his large decorative panels, including those for the Boston Public Library; Richard III. and Lady Anne, shown at the Royal Academy in 1896; Hamlet in 1897. and King Lear's Daughters in 1898.
